Information is not a commodity

After last Monday’s lecture on autopoesis, I did some online research and found a video of Heinz von Foerster discussing the subject. He brings up several ideas including an understanding that “information is not a commodity” and that “communication is the interactive computation of a reality.”

‘…communication is the interactive computation of reality’ – I like that – its a statement you could spend hours debating though. I would agree to a certain extent with the ‘what the frogs eye tells the frogs brain’ analogy, but as experimental cognitive psychologists have demonstrated, reality is very much a subjective thing. For example, there are some cultures who are unable to perceive right angles, and others unable to perceive depth. Is there any such thing as an objective reality? Now there’s a question!
